FMG Newsletter: A Dating App Update, Basketball, and A Few Surprises
I'm back to talking about Baby Reindeer, apparently
Happy Friday and happy June! I love summer :)
Interiors/Friendship: I have been to and I love so many restaurants, bars, and attractions in the city of Chicago — but none are as special to me as the homes of my best friends. It’s a rare occurrence to get to see one of those homes immortalized, so I’m thrilled to share that the home of one of my very best friends, Maddie, was published as a home tour on The Everygirl last week. To know Maddie is to know that this piece and this home are very special to her, and it’s so fun to see her girly, colorful, inspiring, and vibrant home on my screen. She rudely never mentioned me by name, but please know that two of the times she references her friends, she’s talking about me.
Basketball: I don’t feel that it’s my place to add much to the discourse around the happenings in the WNBA over the last week, but I do want to share that I enjoyed this piece from The Cut, in which the writer details her own personal experience at the Sky-Fever game. At first, I was surprised/disappointed that the piece didn’t dive deeper into ~the foul~ itself — but at the end of the day, I’m actually really glad that the piece instead focused so much on the sheer volume of fans and attention that Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have brought to the league (fans like me!). Both women possess once-in-a-lifetime talent AND star power, and to diminish that in any way, for either of them, is nothing short of a shame.
Books: Two amazing book recs!! Yay!! I finished Nora Nguyen’s Adam & Evie’s Matchmaking Tour (which I mentioned in an earlier newsy, and I left it feeling hopeful, joyful, and filled with wanderlust. It’s genuinely the perfect rom-com — the setting is stunning (even on the page — it was so descriptive that I felt like I could see it), the spice was spicy, and the characters were so deeply likable. I will be passing my copy onto my travel-obsessed, fellow hopelessly-romantic cousin Lauren next — but please pre-order your own copy here. In other news, I also just finished Dolly Alderton’s Good Material. I looooove Dolly Alderton’s non-fiction work (specifically Everything I Know About Love), but was a little hesitant to read this one because 1. I hadn’t read her fiction before and 2. the premise just genuinely didn’t sound that interesting to me. I love when I’m proven wrong. It’s a super quick read, and it expertly blends witty, readable dialogue with genuinely thought-provoking observations and commentary. It’s Baby Reindeer meets Bridget Jones, which is a sentence I never expected to type.
Dating Apps: I thought, this week, that I officially cracked the code and finally discovered how to have a lasting dating app conversation (that ends in a date? the audacity!). Unfortunately, the code remains uncracked. This guy had a pic in his profile with a Lemon White Claw, I responded that I think that’s a serial-killer-type flavor, we had approximately three (3) messages’ worth of banter about White Claw flavors, and then he artfully yet decidedly stopped answering. But alas, we persevere!
The aforementioned Maddie recently told me that my affinity for White Claws (vs. High Noons or other vodka-based seltzers) is aging me. This is something I plan to research in the coming weeks (through careful field research, naturally!), so stay tuned.
I hope you have a great weekend of sun, laughter, friendship, and better flirting than I myself am capable of.
XO, Gail
And as a reminder:
It’s an election year, and it is my duty to remind you that while newsletters like this are crucial for maintaining sanity and levity, I am not a news source and am in no way a replacement for staying informed. For every newsletter you read that makes you smile, I hope you also read an informed take on politics, world events, and social issues (then fact check it!) — and for every heavy piece of news you take in, I hope you also consume and/or create a piece of art that promotes light, laughter, and joy.
